John Paul has been active in his community by helping feed the hungry at Missionaries of Charity, Siloam Mission, and Winnipeg Harvest. He has also volunteered with the Festival du Voyageur, and the St. Boniface Diocesan High School.

John Paul has always tried to lead by example. One of his leadership roles was to manage the coxswains of whalers, when three corps participated in a sail weekend, ensuring that they could man the boat, while still being able to instruct the junior Cadets in their crew. A second role was as RPO, where he managed Petty Officers, some of whom weren’t confident in their teaching abilities, to successfully provide instruction to their junior Cadets.
